When the Alcazaba was built, it was one of the most important defensive buildings in Málaga. It was built at a time when the Arabs ruled southern Spain and Portugal. The central market in Málaga is one of the best locations in the city to experience local life. Nice detail: the central market halls were shipyards until the 14th century, after that the space was used for the storage of weapons and as a barracks and military hospital. Today it is home to one of the most vibrant and exciting environments in all of Málaga. The market includes hundreds of stalls selling fresh Spanish fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, cheese, olives, nuts and spices. The market can be overwhelming for a tourist at times, but don’t worry: there are plenty of small tapas stalls to grab a bite and a drink and enjoy the real life in Málaga.
